And the thing we know about Grandma was that she wasn’t running to the store for specialty ingredients or using fancy kitchen gadgets! Instead, she was mixing by hand and using basic pantry staple ingredients, both of which are perks to this recipe as well, making it a viral treat anyone can whip up at any time!

The best part may be that a batch of these viral chocolate chip cookies takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish! Now your sweet tooth can be satisfied in record time using easy ingredients!

Ingredients For Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Salted Butter
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Fine Sea Salt
  • Large Egg
  • Vanilla Extract
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Powdered Milk
  • Baking Soda
  • Mini Chocolate Chips
  • Salted Butter – If you only have unsalted butter on hand, you can use that instead of salted. To do so, just increase the fine sea salt by an additional 1/4 teaspoon.
  • Powdered Milk – Powdered coffee creamer or malted milk powder can be used in place of powdered milk. However, powdered milk doesn’t impact the structure of the cookie, only the taste. Therefore, if you prefer, you can omit powdered milk altogether.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – Feel free to use your choice of milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate chips. You can use mini or regular-sized chocolate chips, your choice – but the mini chips do deliver a better cookie!
  • Add Nuts – If you enjoy a nutty crunch in your cookies, feel free to add your favorite nut to these cookies! I recommend finely chopping them so the pieces aren’t too big!

How To Make Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

  1. Preheat the oven and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the salted butter, light brown sugar, granulated sugar, and fine sea salt together by hand using a Danish dough whisk or a wooden spoon. Stir until this mixture becomes pale and fluffy, similar to frosting.
  3. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until there isn’t any egg yolk visible.
  4. Whisk all-purpose flour, powdered milk, and baking soda together in a separate bowl. Next, combine the dry ingredients with the bowl of wet ingredients.
  5. Fold in the mini chocolate chips until they’re evenly dispersed throughout the cookie dough.
  6. Portion out the chocolate chip cookie dough, rolling each portion in your hands. Then place them on the baking sheet, ensuring there’s plenty of space between each cookie.
  7. Bake the cookies until the edges begin to turn lightly golden brown. If you prefer, once the cookies come out of the oven, press additional mini chocolate chips into the tops of each cookie and sprinkle them with sea salt.
  8. Cool the cookies on a baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling completely.

When baking this recipe, I used a 13×18 baking sheet and was able to offset the cookies to fit eight onto the pan. Feel free to use baking sheets of different sizes, just make sure you’re placing the cookie dough onto a cooled baking sheet each time.

If cookie dough is dropped onto a hot baking sheet, it will cause the cookies to spread, impacting the final structure of the cookies. If you only have one baking sheet to work with, simply pop the cookie sheet into the freezer to cool down in between batches.

Freeze Homemade Cookies To Enjoy Later!

I highly recommend freezing cookies, baked or frozen, to enjoy later without having to cause a kitchen mess. I love having a stash of cookie dough in the freezer so I can have fresh-baked cookies at the drop of a hat anytime friends or family pop over!

How To Freeze Cookie Dough: Portion out the cookie dough onto a baking sheet and transfer it to the freezer to freeze. Then transfer the frozen cookie dough balls into a gallon-sized freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

How To Freeze Baked Cookies: Allow freshly baked cookies to cool completely. Then transfer the cooled cookies into a freezer gallon bag or freezer-safe, air-tight container. Be sure to separate the layers of cookies with parchment paper! Then store the baked cookies in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉ and line two 13×18-inch baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl with a Danish dough whisk (preferred) or a wooden spoon, cream together ½ cup salted butter, ½ cup light brown sugar, ⅓ cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon fine sea salt until pale and fluffy – slightly resembling frosting. You can also use a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and mix at speed #4 for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Mix in 1 large egg and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until fully incorporated, with no streaks of yolk visible.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together 1½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon powdered milk, and 1½ teaspoons baking soda, then mix into the bowl with the wet ingredients and mix until most of the flour has been incorporated.
  • Add 1½ cups mini chocolate chips and fold until evenly distributed throughout the dough and no more flour is visible.
  • Use a #24 cookie scoop to portion out the dough into 1.8-ounce portions. Roll the dough into balls with your palms and place the cookies at least 3 inches apart on the baking sheet.
  • I offset and fit eight cookies per 13×18-inch baking pan. You can use baking sheets of different sizes, but make sure you place the dough on a cool baking sheet each time (pop it in the freezer for a couple of minutes between batches, if needed).
  • Bake for 11 to 13 minutes, just until the edges are turning light golden brown.
  • Optional: As soon as you remove the cookies from the oven, press additional mini chocolate chips onto the tops and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
