Cherry Hand Pie Ingredients

Canned Red Tart Cherries – The base of the cherry filling, these are typically found in the canned fruit section instead of the baking aisle. We used Oregon brand in this recipe.

Corn Starch – This ingredient is used to thicken the filling, giving it the perfect ooey-gooey consistency we all love!

Granulated Sugar – Used to top the crust as well as in the filling to offset tart or sour cherries and sweeten it up!

Premade Pie Crusts – Grab your favorite refrigerated brand or homemade pie crust if you’re not a fan of premade pie dough!

Egg Wash – An egg beaten with water for brushing onto the dough before baking will ensure you get a beautifully golden-brown crust!

How To Make Cherry Heart Hand Pies

Don’t be let the thought of making 10 individual pies scare you off! Making them is as easy as the ingredients used in this recipe, short and sweet!

Filling: Cook the cherries with half of the liquid from the can, sugar, and cornstarch until it becomes thick and bubbles. Then allow the cherry pie filling to cool.

Crust: Roll the crust out on a floured surface. Then, use a 3-inch heart-shaped cutter to cut the dough for the pies. Use a smaller one for the hearts on top.

Assemble: Place half of the hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spoon the filling onto one large heart then place another large heart on top and crimp the edges together with a fork. Place the smaller heart cutouts on top of the filled hand pies.

Brush: Use a pastry brush to coat the crusts with the egg wash, then sprinkle with sugar.

Bake: The pies will be golden brown once they’re finished cooking, allow them to cool slightly, and then enjoy!

Storing Cherry Heart Hand Pies

Store these hand pies in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

Can I Eat These Warm Or Cold?

Either! We love them fresh out of the oven but they’re just as good after they’ve cooled down to room temperature as well!

To reheat leftovers, place them in the oven at 325 degrees for 15 minutes so the pie crust stays crispy.

Cherry Substitutions

Instead of using canned cherries, you could easily make your own filling using frozen cherries, or even fresh! Then combine them with lemon juice, water, almond extract, sugar, and corn starch.

You could also make these hand pies using the filling from your very own cherry pie recipe!

These pies would also be fantastic with a glaze on them. Simply omit the sprinkled sugar and whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 oz. water until smooth, then spoon or brush over the baked pies and let set.
