4th of July Cookies (With Cake Mix) are loaded with red, white, and blue M&M’s for a fun American-themed treat! The red velvet cake mix adds a nice pop of color that will really make this plate of cookies stand out on the dessert table!

There’s no shame in my boxed cake mix recipe game, especially when it comes to the holidays! They’re busy enough between planning what to have for the main meal, inviting friends and family, and figuring out how to entertain the kids.

That’s why I also love my cake mix base Red, White, and Blue Marble Sheet Cake or Red, White & Blue Cake Batter Dip! Super simple, festive, AND delicious! It’s a win all around!

5 Reasons Why This Recipe Works!

  • Easy Ingredients! Boxed cake mix paired with vegetable oil and eggs then finished off with patriotic M&M’s! It doesn’t get easier than that!
  • Quick To Make! Simply mix the ingredients together, chill it, roll into balls then coat in sugar, and bake! Less than 30 minutes of hands-on time!
  • Inexpensive! Likely all you need to run out for is a boxed cake mix and M&M’s!
  • Plenty To Share! This recipe yields about two dozen cookies. Plenty to feed all of your guests at your 4th of July party!

Ingredient Notes

The ingredient list for these cookies is short and sweet, which is sometimes exactly what we all need from time to time! To make a batch all you need is:

  • Boxed Red Velvet Cake Mix – The red base to this 4th of July cookies recipe!
  • Vegetable Oil – Binds the cookies together while adding moisture during baking.
  • Eggs – Makes these cookies rich, tender, and moist!
  • M&M’s – Grab a bag of red, white, and blue M&M’s!
  • Granulated Sugar – Once the cookies are rolled into balls they get a sweet sugar coating!

This easy recipe is great for switching up to get different flavor combinations! Grab a yellow cake mix and pair it with chocolate chips or a chocolate cake mix and add white chocolate chips!

As long your choice of flavor cake mix is between 15 and 16 ounces this recipe will work for whatever delicious variations you create!

Frequently Asked Questions

How To Store

Keep these cake mix cookies in an airtight container for up to 1 week at room temperature. You could also freeze them for up to 3 months!

Do I Make The Boxed Cake Mix First?

Nope! Simply open the cake mix and dump it into the bowl dry. Then add in the remaining ingredients from my recipe!

Can I Skip Chilling These Cookies?

I don’t suggest it. Chilling the dough is extremely important, without completing this step the dough will be too soft to shape and roll.

4th of July Cookies are red velvet cookies made with just 5 easy ingredients to create soft, chewy festive cookies that all the kids will love!

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25 oz.) box Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup Red White, & Blue M&M’s
  • ½ cup granulated sugar optional coating

Instructions

  • Add the cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs to a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and beat until combined. Fold in half of the M&M’s.
  • Cover the bowl and chill the dough in the refrigerator for 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Use a medium cookie scoop to portion out the dough and gently roll into balls. Then roll the balls in the sugar to coat. Place the balls of dough on the prepared baking sheet at least 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 8 to 9 minutes. Do not over bake these cookies, they will look puffy and slightly underdone, but they will finish cooking on the baking sheet after coming out of the oven.
  • Press the M&M’s into the tops of the cookies right after they come out of the oven, then let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • It is extremely important that you chill these cookies for at least 45 minutes and not too much longer than 1 hour. The dough will be too soft to shape and roll without chilling.
  • Prior to the 1-hour chilling mark, these cookies really puff up and have more of a soft and chewy texture, after 1 hour they can become hard and crunchy.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Feel free to change out the cake mix flavor and add-ins to match the season.

Made these for the 4th of July and they’re delicious! Everyone in my family has enjoyed them. They’re definitely sticky before the chilling, but after chilling for an hour they were easy to shape.
