Whiskey Smash Ingredients

  • Mint leaves – These are muddled with a lemon wedge to release fresh lemon and mint flavor.
  • Lemon – For a bright burst of citrus.
  • Blueberry simple syrup – Make your own with my easy Blueberry Simple Syrup recipe.
  • Bourbon whiskey – The booze for your cocktail!
  • Club soda – Added last for a splash of sparkle.

Substitutions & Variations

  • For a maple twist, replace a half ounce of Blueberry Simple Syrup with a half ounce of maple syrup. Make sure to use the real stuff! This is especially tasty in fall when you want comforting flavors or in spring during maple syrup season!
  • Lime fan? Replace lemon wedges with lime instead.
  • It’s best to fill the cocktail shaker with whole ice cubes for shaking, but you can serve this drink over crushed ice if you prefer.

What does muddling mean?

It basically means smashing it up to release flavor. Often, berries, fruit, and/or fresh herbs are muddled to make craft cocktails. In this recipe, you muddle lemon and mint together.

What tools should you use for muddling?

You can buy a muddler to add to your barware set, use a mortar and pestle, or simply use the handle of a wooden spoon!

How should I serve it?

Old fashioned glasses are the perfect size, as high ball glasses tend to be too tall.

I garnish mine with the drink’s fresh ingredients: mint sprigs, lemon wedges, and a few plump blueberries.

What on earth made yours a gorgeous red berry color? Followed recipe to the detail and mine is hideous green.

    1. We use homemade blueberry simple syrup which is a deep berry purple color that lightens a bit when mixed with the other ingredients. What did you use for syrup?
