Rebecca’s Recipe Review
Taste: Rich and creamy chocolate with a hint of bergamot, citrus, and malt from the Earl Grey.
Texture: Thick and creamy mouthfeel.
Ease: 3/10
Pros: Super smooth and bold flavor.
Cons: A little more involved than typical hot chocolate because of the steeping process, but not hard at all.

Substitutions & Variations For Earl Grey Hot Chocolate
- Milk – I prefer whole milk since it yields a creamier hot chocolate, but feel free to use your milk or non-dairy milk of choice.
- Tea Bags – Using tea bags is easiest in this recipe; however, if you prefer, loose leaf tea can also be used.
- Tea – Swap out Earl Grey tea for chai tea, English breakfast tea, a decaf tea, or any tea of your choice for a flavor variation on this hot chocolate tea.
- Chocolate Bar – For a sweeter hot chocolate, you can swap the bittersweet chocolate bar out for a milk chocolate bar.
- Vanilla Bean Paste – An equal amount of vanilla extract can be used in place of vanilla bean paste.

How To Make Earl Grey Hot Chocolate
- Simmer whole milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Remove the milk from the heat and then steep two Earl Grey tea bags in it.
- Prepare the honey whipped cream by whipping heavy cream, honey, vanilla paste, and salt in a mixing bowl until it becomes thick and fluffy.
- Remove the tea bags from the warm milk and return the pot to the stovetop over medium heat.
- Stir in chopped bittersweet chocolate, Dutch-processed cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla bean paste, and fine sea salt.
- Whisk the hot chocolate mixture constantly until the chocolate has melted.
- Pour the Earl Grey Hot Chocolate into mugs and top with the homemade honey whipped cream. Enjoy!
Rebecca’s Tea Hot Chocolate Tips
- If you prefer a stronger tea flavor, add one additional tea bag when steeping the tea in the warm milk.
- For a lighter Earl Grey flavor, use just one tea bag or don’t steep the two tea bags for long.
- This recipe serves up two 8+ ounce portions or three 5+ ounce portions of Earl Grey hot chocolate. To serve more, just double the recipe!
- Be careful not to overwhip the whipped cream when making it, or it will become grainy or curdled. Perfect whipped cream should be soft with fluffy peaks that are smooth and creamy!
