Learning How To Heat Treat Flour allows me to enjoy one of my guilty pleasures safely… eating cookie dough! Now I don’t have to think twice when I’m licking the spatula!
Don’t worry, my edible cookie dough recipes such as Edible Peanut Butter Cookie Dough and Easy Edible Monster Cookie Dough also don’t include raw eggs. So, it really is safe to eat from all aspects!
The only thing it isn’t safe for is my waistline! Especially when I dig into my Edible Brownie Batter that’s made with only 3 ingredients!
The Importance Of Heat Treating Flour
Consuming raw flour puts us at risk of getting sick from the germs and bacteria that can sometimes be found in flour. By heat treating the flour, we can then eat our favorite doughs and recipes safely!
To properly heat treat flour, it must reach a temperature of at least 160 degrees F. The high temperature then kills off any germs or bacteria that may be in the flour.

- All-Purpose Flour – As much as your recipe requires
- Oven or Microwave
- Baking Sheet or Microwave-safe Bowl
- Whisk
- Kitchen Thermometer
How To Heat Treat Flour At Home
Heat treating the flour can be done in two different ways. But both ways are quick and easy, so before you know it it’s ready to be used in your edible dough recipe of choice!
- Oven Method: The first method is to spread the flour out in a thin layer on a rimmed baking sheet and bake it. This method takes just 5 to 6 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Another common method to heat treat flour is to just microwave it! Don’t worry, how to heat treat flour in the microwave is as easy as in the oven!
2. Microwave Method: To do so, just add the flour to a microwave-safe bowl and stir it between intervals. With both methods, once the flour reaches a temperature of at least 160 Degrees F with a food thermometer, it’s safe to use.
How To Use Heat Treated Flour
Now that you know how to heat-treat flour in the oven, you’re ready to make edible cookie dough! - The flour is over baked if the temperature of it becomes too high. Unfortunately, you will likely notice a taste difference in your recipe if your flour is over baked!

How To Store Heat Treated Flour
Store heat treated flour in an airtight container and store it at room temperature for up to 3 months. I recommend using some parchment paper shaped like a cone to funnel it into the container.
You can heat treat your flour ahead of time since it can be saved in an airtight container at room temperature. However, since it takes just a few minutes to heat treat it, I prefer to make a fresh batch whenever I need it.
