All About The Homemade Chocolate Syrup
To make the best chocolate milk ever, you first need to skip over the store-bought mixes and make homemade chocolate syrup! This recipe makes 2 cups of syrup with just 20 minutes of hands-on time using only 6 ingredients.
The recipe for homemade chocolate milk is made with Dutch-processed cocoa powder. This gives the syrup its deep, rich chocolate flavor since it has a smooth, mellow flavor profile.
The addition of a pinch of salt balances out the sweetness so that the syrup doesn’t become sickly sweet. Whereas the vanilla extract smooths it all out while simultaneously enhancing the chocolate flavor.
Making for a homemade chocolate syrup that your milk begs to mix with to give you a sweet treat!

How To Make Chocolate Milk
- Combine the water and sugar together in a small pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and sift in the cocoa powder.
- Whisk in the vanilla extract, salt, and corn syrup. Then continue to cook while whisking often until the syrup begins to thicken.
- Remove from the heat and strain the chocolate syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove any clumps. Then allow it to cool before using.
- Prepare your glass of homemade chocolate milk by stirring cooled chocolate syrup into your glass of milk.

Rebecca’s Tips
- Homemade Syrup – The BEST chocolate milk ever must be made with this homemade chocolate syrup recipe! Just one taste, and you’ll always make it this way from now on!
- Strain The Syrup – After making the syrup, you’ll want to use a fine mesh sieve to strain it. This way, it can remove any possible lumps that may have formed when it was cooked. This quick and easy step is worth it to ensure you have the smoothest syrup possible!
- Cool Before Using – Once the syrup has cooked, allow it to cool completely before using. That way, our cup of milk won’t be warm!
- Chilled Glass – For an ice-cold glass of chocolate milk, chill your glass beforehand!
- Choose Your Milk – I like making mine with whole milk. Its thicker consistency makes for a creamy texture that I LOVE and look for in chocolate milk. However, if you don’t prefer whole milk, you can make this recipe with your favorite type of milk.
- Dairy Free Chocolate Milk – For Dairy-Free Chocolate Milk, just use your favorite non-dairy milk, such as soy milk, coconut milk, or almond milk, just fine.
- Servings – This homemade chocolate milk recipe yields one serving. However, the chocolate syrup recipe yields 2 cups of homemade syrup. Therefore, you can make 8 cups of chocolate milk with one batch of syrup.
How To Store Leftover Chocolate Syrup
Store any leftover chocolate syrup in a tightly sealed container or jar with a lid. Keep the syrup in the fridge to enjoy for up to 2 weeks.
