Like with Jello shots, you can make these boozy bites with a ton of tasty variations. Made with smooth pudding and flavored alcohol or liqueur, these treats are always a huge hit!

Just remember, you’ll want to keep them far away from the kiddos — they’re for adults only!

Whip up Pudding Shots in about 5 minutes, refrigerate for 30, then serve in plastic shot cups or shot glasses. Top with whipped cream and decorative garnishes and they’re ready to serve!

Pudding Shots Ingredients

Pudding Shots are made with 4 major components: instant pudding mix, alcohol/liqueur, milk, and Cool Whip. You can mix and match the pudding and booze for endless flavor combinations, and feel free to go all out with extra add-ons!

  • Instant Pudding – This magic powder contains ingredients that absorb liquid to form pudding texture instantly (you cannot substitute it for Cook & Serve).
  • Milk – Make sure it’s COLD so it can react with the instant pudding mix.
  • Alcohol/Liqueur – This should also be cold when combined with the pudding mix. But it’s not the end of the world if you forget to chill it. Check out some of my favorite booze/pudding pairings below!
  • Cool Whip – This is my secret for giving Pudding Shots an extra creamy texture!

How To Make Vanilla And Chocolate Pudding Shots

  1. Add pudding mix, milk, and alcohol to a medium mixing bowl and whisk together for 2 minutes.
  2. Whisk in the thawed cool whip until fully combined.
  3. Let the mixture set for 5 minutes.

Then evenly divide the mixture among the shot glasses or cups and place in the refrigerator to set for at least 30 minutes. I like to use a medium cookie scoop for this.

Pudding Shot Recipe FAQs

Can You Make Them Ahead Of Time?

Yes! As easy as they are to prepare the day of serving, you can certainly make any of these Pudding Shot recipes up to 1 week in advance. Store them in the refrigerator after making them. I like to make them in these disposable cups that come with lids for easy transporting and storing.

You can also freeze them for up to 2 months, but don’t fill them all the way to the top so they have room to expand.

Can They Be Made Sugar Free?

I have never tested the recipe with sugar-free pudding so I can’t say for sure, but I believe it will work.

How Many Servings?

This depends on how full you fill your cups and how much cool whip you use (half or whole tub) but you should get between 20 and 25 pudding shots with this recipe.

Saving this recipe for the holiday parties this December! These look so decadent and delicious!

Made the cheesecake ones and they are runny as all get out. Not even close to a set texture of pudding.

      1. They should not be runny, did you make sure to use instant Pudding and to fold in the cool whip? Using regular whipped cream will make them looser. You can fold in the other half of the cool whip to thicken it and they will thicken more in the fridge. They are soft like a Pudding consistency.

I use dove chocolate peanutbutter pudding with with screwball peanutbutter whiskey whiskey and For an added taste I lined the shot cup with a little bit of peanut butter…so good

Creamy and delicious with a nice little kick of alcohol! Everyone loved them!

    10. Can you use whipped cream rather then cool whip

      1. I have never made them this way but it should be fine If the pudding shots are going to be consumed shortly after making, otherwise the whipped cream could lose its stability since it’s much softer than cool whip. I would not use storebought whipped cream, only homemade, you can try my recipe here: https://www.sugarandsoul.co/perfect-homemade-whipped-cream/ I would recommend using my notes for stabilizing the whipped cream before mixing it with the prepared pudding.

    11. Have you tried this with flavored whiskey?

      1. We tried it with Skrewball and unfortunately the whiskey was the only thing you really tasted – no peanut butter flavor. I have not tried other flavors.

    12. I found that if I use vodka, it takes more pudding mix.

    13. 5 stars
Yes, it will work with sugar free, and we added double booze, worked great.

    14. Ashley Reavis says:

Can you freeze them? Ooh, can you imagine a poke cake made with this?

      1. I’ve never tried, but I bet the would be delicious! And that sounds like an amazing idea for a poke cake!

      2. Michael G Puskar says:

I always put them in the freezer, the colder they are the better and they will not freeze because of the booze

    15. Patricia S says:

I haven’t made these yet, but they look yummy! Do you think a plant based milk would work? I usually use organic, unsweetened coconut milk. Thanks for the cool recipes!

      1. Hi Patricia, I’m not sure as I don’t use alternative milk very often. You could try it, make sure that the coconut milk is cold.

    16. 5 stars
Another flavor combination is Pistachio pudding with Amaretto, yummy!

    17. I love this recipe. Can I use heavy whipping cream instead??? I want to make it very rich.

      1. I’ve never made it with whipping cream. My concern would be that the pudding would be very thick.

      2. Yes you can! I use 3/4 cup HWC and 8oz of whipped cream. I freeze mine and they come out like the most smooth ice cream youโ€™ve ever had. The extra cream also cuts down on the strong alcohol aftertaste. Been making pudding shots this way for over 15yrs and everyone raves about them.

      3. My usual recipe for pudding shots is 1/2 milk to dissolve pudding the whip in 1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream and 1/4 cup alcohol. They are thicker more whip cream/mousse consistency. That is my families preference to pudding consistency.

Like that you use less whipped topping than others. When doing Kailua I like to add 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso, or instant coffee. If using vodka as part of the alcohol a flavored one like whipped or vanilla work really well with most flavors. Cheesecake flavored pudding is another great option.

    19. When you say half a tub of cool whip what size tub were you talking about? The normal size or the large one?

        1. Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š
